The Art of the Handwritten Note
I received a hand-written note in the mail today and I was thrilled. It was a note of gratitude from a customer who had purchased a pen and some stationery from my shop. I thought it was wonderful that this customer took the time to write a personal note to me. And it was so nice to get that in the mail instead of bills – ugh! – or junk mail (more trash; don’t need it). But a hand-written note – I will keep it and cherish it forever. This is the art of the handwritten note; it becomes a cherished memory.
So, parents please encourage your children to write a thank-you note to that friend or relative who sent them a gift for graduation. And let’s be clear here – I am not talking about sending a text or an e-mail. Both electronic methods are quick, easy, effective and effortless but let’s face it – they are also a bit thoughtless. So, put some thought and effort into your thank you note and take your time with it.
If someone has thought enough of you to send you a gift then you need to be thoughtful enough to write a thank you note back to them. Even if someone has given you that special gift in person it is still so special to send them a written thank you note that they can keep forever.
This goes for weddings and showers as well. Acknowledge that special gift with a special hand-written note in your own writing. Yes, you could let another friend or relative write this for you but it will have so much more meaning if you take the time to put your own thoughts on the page in your own script.
I keep hearing that handwriting is a lost art. Let’s not lose it completely. Let’s keep it alive and well. Your own handwriting is your own personal identity; almost like your fingerprint. Everyone’s writing is different and unique; you can often identify a person just from their writing. This makes writing a very special art indeed and one we need to use more often.
