The Namiki Nippon Art Collection takes traditional Japanese and auspicious subjects known the world over, such as “Mt. Fuji”, “Hagoita (battledore)”, and “Origami”, and has them drawn on a black lacquered background in Hira Maki-e (Flat Maki-e). The Namiki Nippon Art Crane and Turtle fountain pen will be a beautiful heirloom piece.
The shiny black of the lacquer, along with the overflowing vibrancy from each work makes it a sight to behold.
At the start of the 20th century, a fountain pen utilizing the Japanese traditional art of “Maki-e” was born.
The strong and attractive body with a lacquer finish, and the fine and elegant design by the craftsmen are highly acclaimed around the world, and those skills and spirit have been passed down to the world’s most famous name in Maki-e fountain pens, “Namiki”.
The Nippon Art collection portrays classic Japanese ideas and beliefs using the beauty of the Hira Maki-e technique against rich black lacquer backgrounds. These designs are available as a fountain pen with a 14kt gold nib and as a rolling ball pen with black ink and a fine point.
This Namiki Nippon Art Crane and Turtle fountain pen design was created by a collaboration of maki-e artists (Kokkokai) in Japan. The Nippon Art collection features the Hira Maki-e technique (flat maki-e). The pen matches the Yukari size, has an 14k gold nib and fills via the included Pilot CON-70 converter. The artist’s kanji signature can be seen on the pen as an additional design feature. The Namiki #10 14k gold nib is inscribed with the silhouette of Mt. Fuji as well as the Namiki pentagon logo. With the Hira Maki-e technique, the lacquered main design is decorated with sprinkled gold and silver powders. Several additional layers of lacquer are then applied. After the lacquer is hardened, it is then burnished.
The Crane and Turtle design depicts a crane flying overhead and a turtle looking up from a pond below. In Japan the crane and turtle symbolize good fortune and longevity. An old Japanese saying proclaims, “As the crane one thousand years, the tortoise ten thousand years.” This fountain pen pays tribute to these symbols of a long and prosperous life.
The water of the pond is depicted with flourishing gold waves that twist all the way down one side of the barrel. The crane in the sky spies the turtle down below, and the turtle makes eye contact in return. Gold powder is used in abundance to depicts the details on the crane’s wings and the turtle’s shell. A fine gold band encircles the bottom of the cap lip, making the pen’s most vulnerable spot stronger in a very subtle manner.
These pens are truly one-of-a-kind works of art, and they are warrantied for life by Namiki, and they come packaged in a traditional oriental wood velvet-lined gift box.
Please note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been inked.
Symbols of lucky fortune have been treasured throughout the ages.
