The Namiki Nippon Art Collection takes traditional Japanese and auspicious subjects known the world over, such as “Mt. Fuji”, “Hagoita (battledore)”, and “Origami”, and has them drawn on a black lacquered background in Hira Maki-e (Flat Maki-e). The Namiki Nippon Art Chinese Phoenix fountain pen will be a beautiful heirloom piece.
The shiny black of the lacquer, along with the overflowing vibrancy from each work makes it a sight to behold.
At the start of the 20th century, a fountain pen utilizing the Japanese traditional art of “Maki-e” was born.
The strong and attractive body with a lacquer finish, and the fine and elegant design by the craftsmen are highly acclaimed around the world, and those skills and spirit have been passed down to the world’s most famous name in Maki-e fountain pens, “Namiki”.
The Nippon Art collection portrays classic Japanese ideas and beliefs using the beauty of the Hira Maki-e technique against rich black lacquer backgrounds. These designs are available as a fountain pen with a 14kt gold nib and as a rolling ball pen with black ink and a fine point.
This Namiki Nippon Art fountain pen in the Chinese Phoenix design was created by a collaboration of maki-e artists (Kokkokai) in Japan. The Nippon Art collection features the Hira Maki-e technique (flat maki-e). The pen matches the Yukari size, has an 14k gold nib and fills via the included Pilot CON-70 converter. The artist’s kanji signature can be seen on the pen as an additional design feature. The Namiki #10 14k gold nib is inscribed with the silhouette of Mt. Fuji as well as the Namiki pentagon logo. With the Hira Maki-e technique, the lacquered main design is decorated with sprinkled gold and silver powders. Several additional layers of lacquer are then applied. After the lacquer is hardened, it is then burnished.
The Chinese Phoenix design pays homage to the special bird, known to the Chinese as Feng Huang. The phoenix symbolizes virtue, grace and prosperity, as well as the union of opposites, yin and yang, both male and female. Unlike the western phoenix, the Chinese phoenix is not reborn from its ashes. It represents the light of the sun and the moon, and is the bird of the southern sky. Its song is said to have been the basis of the five cardinal notes of Chinese melody and one of the four creatures that created the world (the other three being the dragon, the unicorn, and the tortoise).
These pens are truly one-of-a-kind works of art, and they are warrantied for life by Namiki, and they come packaged in a traditional oriental wood velvet-lined gift box.
Please note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been inked.
Symbols of lucky fortune have been treasured throughout the ages.
